Steven Mikel At his working table painting live with coffee

This unique monochromatic workshop will have a profound effect on the way you see the world around you and improve your ability to communicate your artist vision, and greatly enhance your painting prowess with traditional watercolors.

"The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes." is a quote written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and spoken by his infamous character Sherlock Homes within the book "The Hound of the Baskervilles" Steven's artist vision centers around the revelation of overlooked or unseen experiential moments hidden within everyday life surrounding us.

Old Residences

Steven will illustrate his Dark Roast Watercolor technique of painting with coffee, through interesting class demonstrations, instruction and enlightening discussions. Students will then have opportunity to apply those aspects during in-workshop coffee painting exercises. Subjects and scenes to be painted during the exercises will be varied, interesting and fun, and based upon the weather, the class may spend a short time outside sketching or taking cell phone photographs. Steven will spend time individually with each student as well as, lead class sharing, and question and answer times.

Here are just a few of Steven's topics to perk (pun intended) your imagination:

  • How and why of coffee...
  • Observing and not just seeing
  • Color Blindness and the Skill of Monochromatic Perception
  • Perspective, how and why to break it
  • Peeling away the layers
  • Connection Points
  • Adjusting your Focus
  • Coming to grips with your vision.

Human beings have been given an incredible gift... the ability to “see” beyond the physical nature of “sight”. However, in everyday life it is easy to focus on the “Big Picture” and miss many of the little details that hold all the experiences together. Steven's vision is to bring those hidden moments to the surface, and help all of us truly connect with the “Big Pictures” in a deeper, more emotional way.
